Book Review: The Charge by Brendon Burchard
Introduction
This is a personal favourite of mine that I listen to on Audible but also have the hard copy. It is brilliant and I do apply the suggestions.
In The Charge: Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive, Brendon Burchard offers a roadmap to living a more energized, fulfilling, and purpose-driven life. Drawing from personal anecdotes, scientific research, and practical strategies, Burchard challenges readers to break free from autopilot living and tap into their full potential. Whether you’re seeking greater success, deeper relationships, or simply more joy, this book provides a framework to help you achieve it.
Review
Burchard identifies 10 "human drives"—core motivators such as control, competence, connection, and courage—that shape our emotions, actions, and overall life satisfaction. He explains that while some drives are reactive (e.g., avoiding pain), others are more aspirational and proactive, like seeking purpose or pursuing growth. By consciously activating and mastering these drives, Burchard argues, we can elevate our experience of life.
One of the book’s standout qualities is its practical, actionable advice. Each chapter concludes with exercises and reflection prompts designed to help readers put the concepts into practice. For example, Burchard encourages readers to reframe challenges as opportunities, set bold goals, and embrace habits that align with their deepest values.
While The Charge is motivational, some readers may find the tone a bit "high-energy" at times, typical of Burchard's style. However, this enthusiasm can be a powerful motivator for those who resonate with his message.
Why You Should Read It
If you’re feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or ready for a major life upgrade, The Charge is an excellent guide. It’s not just about finding success but about thriving in all areas of life—emotionally, socially, and spiritually. With relatable examples and tangible strategies, Burchard empowers readers to take charge of their destiny.

Book Review: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks
Introduction
This book I read and did all the exercises in this year and it was very revealing and fascinating. I now laugh when I see my upper limit blockers start to kick in and now push on rather than stopping.
In The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level, Gay Hendricks delivers a transformative guide for overcoming self-imposed limitations and achieving personal and professional success. Hendricks introduces the concept of the "Upper Limit Problem"—an invisible barrier that keeps us from fully embracing our potential—and provides actionable strategies to break through it. This book is an empowering read for anyone ready to stop holding themselves back and start thriving.
Review
Hendricks' central premise is that most people unknowingly sabotage their happiness and success when they exceed their internal comfort zone. This "Upper Limit Problem" manifests as fear, self-doubt, procrastination, or even physical ailments that prevent us from sustaining greater levels of success and joy. By becoming aware of these patterns, Hendricks argues, we can reprogram our beliefs and step into what he calls the "Zone of Genius"—a state where our unique talents and passions align to create maximum impact and fulfillment.
The book is both philosophical and practical, with simple yet profound exercises that help readers identify their Upper Limit behaviors and shift into a more expansive mindset. Hendricks’ warm, conversational tone makes complex concepts accessible, and his real-world examples bring his ideas to life.
Some readers might find parts of the book repetitive, as Hendricks reinforces key concepts multiple times. However, this repetition can serve as a helpful reminder, particularly when tackling deeply ingrained habits and beliefs.
Why You Should Read It
The Big Leap is a game-changer for anyone feeling stuck or unfulfilled, despite achieving outward success. Hendricks offers a clear roadmap for identifying and dismantling the internal blocks that keep us from living our best lives. Whether you’re pursuing a dream career, seeking healthier relationships, or striving for inner peace, this book is a powerful tool to help you make "the big leap" into your Zone of Genius.
